What is a NeeDoh? Why is it Sold Out Everywhere?

NeeDoh is a squishy sensory toy by Schylling that kids have been obsessing over. Their squishy toys such as the “NeeDoh Nice Cube” have been going absolutely viral. Squeezing the NeeDoh toys give kids and teens a calming and satisfying sensation. As a result, they’re sold out everywhere and kids have started to trade them at school.

Why Are NeeDohs So Popular Right Now?

NeeDoh first came out in 2008 but exploded in popularity more recently thanks to its satisfying sensory effect, collectible styles, and viral TikTok trend. With TikTok “squish” videos and massive NeeDoh collections, the trend has been fueled even more.

They’re small enough to fit in backpacks and pockets, so students often bring them to school to trade with friends. They’re also relatively inexpensive, making them an easy impulse buy whenever someone spots a new color or style in stores. Some kids and parents have even started “NeeDoh hunting,” which is when they visit different stores looking for ones they don’t have yet. I actually love NeeDoh hunting because it means spending unforced time with my kids, and they get some bonding time together, too.

Tweens and teens especially love NeeDohs for the anxiety and stress relief they can help with. They give teens something to do with their hands during class, while studying, during downtime, or when they’re feeling anxious or restless. They also fit the cozy, calming aesthetic that’s popular online right now.

Are NeeDoh Toys Safe?

NeeDohs are generally considered safe when used as intended, but young children should have supervision. They can break or leak if overused (but you can fix them!), and keep in mind that some schools ban using them during class if they’re a distraction.

There have also been instances of burns caused by microwaving NeeDohs. The inside can become extremely hot and stick to the skin, so they should never be heated. You should also avoid biting into NeeDoh, as chunks could be choking hazards. Be careful while experimenting with NeeDohs.

Different Types of NeeDoh

There are many different NeeDoh styles to collect as a hobby, with some of the more common ones including:

  • Nice Cube
  • Nice Berg
  • Gumdrop
  • Dream Drop
  • Glow-in-the-Dark NeeDoh
  • Mini Packs

Why Parents Keep Hearing About Them

Just like the crazes around slime, Pop-Its, fidget spinners, and Silly Bandz, once NeeDohs became trendy, they seem to have taken over conversations and social media feeds. Between trading at school, collection videos online, and the excitement of finding rare NeeDohs in stores, it’s easy to see why the trend spread so quickly. If your life is anything like mine, you’re not just hearing about them, you’re finding random NeeDohs stuffed into hoodie pockets and cupholders on a regular basis.

Where to Buy NeeDohs

NeeDohs are sold at most major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon, along with many locally owned toy and gift stores. My kids and I have luck at Meijer, as well, if you have one near you. Schylling’s website also lists the different NeeDoh products and collections.

Some styles can be hard to find because of how popular they’ve become, and they often sell out quickly once they’re restocked. It’s best to visit stores early in the morning or ask employees about their usual restock days and times.

Conclusion on NeeDoh

No matter how you feel about the NeeDoh obsession, they have quickly become one of the biggest tween and teen trends right now. Between the calming sensory aspect, the collectible options, and the social aspect of trading and sharing them with friends, it’s easy to see why so many kids are hooked. Like many trends before them, NeeDohs may eventually fade in popularity and become a nostalgic memory, but for now, they’ve firmly earned a spot in backpacks and bedrooms everywhere.
