Neon Day is a school spirit week theme where students wear bright fluorescent colors, glow-in-the-dark accessories, or both. Teens can participate with a full head-to-toe outfit or simply add one bright shirt or accessory. Neon is not a color scheme that people usually wear, so it makes for a special spirit week day. In this article, we show you different ways that you can participate!
What Is Neon Day
On Neon Day for Spirit Week, students wear fluorescent or unusually bright colors, like neon pink, green, yellow, orange, blue, or purple. Some schools call it Glow Day, Bright Color Day, or Neon Nights. It’s one of my kids’ favorite dress-up days, and by far one of the easiest to participate in.
Neon Day is often held during homecoming week, but sometimes it’ll come up for Snowfest or another school celebration. When dressing up, make sure to follow the regular school dress code.
Easy Neon Day Outfit Ideas
These Neon Day outfit ideas can be combined or worn individually depending on how much you want to dress up and what items you have.
Neon T-Shirt and Jeans
The simplest option for a neon day outfit is a bright pink, green, yellow, or orange shirt with jeans and tennis shoes.
Neon Hoodie and Leggings
This option is comfortable and an easy choice for cooler weather. Choose a fluorescent hoodie in pink, yellow, green, or orange and pair it with black leggings or jeans. Add bright socks, sneakers, or a matching scrunchie for even more neon.
Neon Safety Vest
Layer a bright yellow or orange high-visibility safety vest over a T-shirt. Add jeans, leggings, or cargo pants and sneakers for an easy outfit that works especially well for a last-minute Neon Day look.
Bright Athletic Outfit
A bright athletic outfit like shorts, leggings, a sports jersey, or a workout top is a great way to participate in this spirit day theme.
Head-to-Toe Neon
Choose one neon color and wear it from top to bottom for a monochromatic look. A bright shirt with matching shorts, leggings, sweatpants, socks, or accessories makes this easy to pull together. Going all-in on one color also makes for some awesome Spirit Week photos.
Rainbow Neon Outfit
Mix several fluorescent colors rather than choosing just one. Try a neon pink shirt, bright green shorts, yellow socks, and colorful accessories.
Neon Tie-Dye Shirt
Buy a tie-dye shirt or make one using fluorescent fabric dye. Pair it with jeans or black leggings so the colors of the shirt really stand out. This is also an easy DIY option if your teen wants to make something before Spirit Week.
Neon Tank Top Over a T-Shirt
Layer a bright tank top over a black or white shirt to make the color stand out while keeping the outfit appropriate for school.
Neon Sweatshirt and Sweatpants
A matching neon sweatshirt and sweatpants set is comfortable and doesn’t require much styling. Teens can also mix colors, like a bright pink sweatshirt with orange or green sweatpants for an even bolder look.
Neon Skirt or Tutu
Pair a bright tutu or skirt with leggings, shorts, or jeans underneath. Add a t-shirt and neon accessories so the tutu stays the main part of the outfit. This is a good choice for teens who like going a little over the top for Spirit Week.
Neon Patterned Outfit
Look for checkerboard, striped, animal-print, smiley-face, or floral patterns in fluorescent colors. A patterned top can do most of the work, so pair it with simple jeans or black leggings and a few bright accessories.
Neon Pajama Pants
Wear bright pajama pants with a matching or neutral top. This is also an option for pajama day during spirit week.
Neon Sports Jersey
Wear a brightly colored soccer, basketball, football, or hockey jersey. Pair it with athletic shorts, leggings, or jeans and add neon socks, sweatbands, or face paint to make the outfit feel even more intentional.
Black Outfit With Neon Accents
Wear mostly black so a neon belt, shirt, socks, or accessories become the focus of your outfit. A black shirt and jeans or leggings can be paired with a neon belt, socks, shoelaces, headband, jewelry, or a bright layer underneath.
White Outfit With Neon Accessories
White provides a clean background that makes fluorescent colors look even brighter. Start with a white t-shirt, sweatshirt, or dress and add neon necklaces, socks, sunglasses, hair accessories, or shoelaces.
Neon Day Outfit Ideas Using Clothes You Already Own
These Neon Day outfit ideas for Spirit Week are perfect for teens who don’t want to buy a completely new outfit.
Summer Clothing
Swimsuit cover-ups, bright tanks, colorful shorts, and beach shirts can work when layered appropriately for school. This is even more fitting if your school has a Beach Day for Spirit Week.
Clothes from an ‘80s Costume
Neon clothing, leg warmers, scrunchies, windbreakers, and oversized tops fit both Neon Day and an ‘80s-inspired look for Decades Day. If your family has old Halloween costumes or dress-up clothes tucked away, you may find what you need right there.
Bright School or Team Gear
A school shirt, jersey, or sweatshirt may work if the school’s colors are bright enough. Add neon socks, shoelaces, a headband, or bracelets if a little more color is needed.
Colorful Pajamas
Neon pajama pants, robes, slippers, or sleep shirts can be repurposed for a Neon Day outfit. Wear colorful pajama pants with a bright t-shirt or hoodie for an easy look. The same pieces can work again if your school also has Pajama Day.
DIY Neon Day Ideas
If you like to make your own outfits or put together unique looks, there are plenty of ways you can do it for neon day.
Decorate a Plain T-Shirt
Use fluorescent fabric markers or fabric paint to add names, school initials, smiley faces, stars, lightning bolts, or doodles to a plain shirt. Teens could also decorate shirts together with friends so everyone has a coordinating outfit for Neon Day.
Make a Neon Tie-Dye Shirt
Use bright fabric dye on a white shirt to create your own Neon Day look. You can stick with one or two colors or use multiple shades for a rainbow effect. Make the shirts ahead of time with friends for an easy group outfit.
Add Neon Tape to an Outfit
Place brightly colored tape on a black shirt or pants to create stripes, shapes, initials, or other designs. The neon pops against black, so you don’t need much tape to make the outfit work.
Make Neon Friendship Bracelets
Friendship bracelets make everything better, especially as an accessory for your neon day outfit. Use fluorescent or bright beads, and make enough to share with your friends!
Decorate Shoes or Shoelaces
Replace regular shoelaces with neon ones, or add temporary, removable decorations to a pair of shoes. Bright laces are useful if your teen wants to participate without putting together an entire neon outfit.
Make a Neon Tutu
Tie strips of fluorescent tulle around an elastic waistband and wear it over leggings, shorts, or jeans.
Group Neon Day Ideas
Spirit week can be extra fun when coordinating with friends! It doesn’t have to be twin day or group theme day for you to plan something together with friends. Here are some fun group outfit ideas for neon day.
Wear a Different Neon Color
Each friend chooses pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, or blue. Everyone can dress mostly in their assigned color, then stand together for a bright rainbow-style group photo.
Dress Like a Pack of Highlighters
Each person wears one solid neon color and makes a homemade highlighter logo or label to attach to their shirt. Choose different colors so the whole group looks like a giant pack of highlighters walking through school.
Wear Matching Neon Shirts
Decorate matching shirts with names, jersey numbers, school initials, or a group slogan. This is also a fun idea for Twin Day during Spirit Week.
Dress as an ‘80s Workout Group
Wear neon leggings, shorts, sweatbands, leg warmers, oversized shirts, and sneakers. Big scrunchies, side ponytails, and bright sunglasses can make the theme even more obvious.
Neon Superheroes
Each friend can choose a different bright color and create a simple superhero emblem. If your school also has a Superhero Day, you can use this idea for that, too!
Neon Rock Band
Wear bright wigs, sunglasses, graphic shirts, and toy microphones or inflatable guitars if your school allows. Give the group a hilarious band name to make the idea even more fun.
Glow-in-the-Dark Skeletons
Dress in black and use fluorescent tape to create simple bone shapes on shirts and pants. This one works even better if your school has a pep rally, dance, or another activity where blacklights might be used.

Everyone wears as many clashing fluorescent colors and patterns as possible. It’s a fun idea for Mismatch Day, too, and the perfect theme for swapping pieces with friends.
