What are Dumpling Squishy Toys?

Dumpling squishy toys are soft, stretchy sensory fidgets shaped like tiny dumplings. They’re a mochi squishy with a squishy, gel-like texture that makes them satisfying to squeeze, stretch, and fidget with. Many dumpling squishies feature cute facial expressions, pastel colors, glitter, or tiny designs. The varying designs have helped make them popular with tweens and teens.

Why Are Dumpling Squishies So Popular?

Dumplings exploded in popularity thanks to TikTok, where “squish videos”, ASMR clips, unboxing videos, and massive squishy collections quickly helped ignite the trend. Their soft, stretchy texture makes them satisfying sensory toys, while the tiny dumpling shapes and cute facial expressions fit with the calming aesthetic tweens and teens love right now.

They’re small enough to fit in backpacks and hoodie pockets, so students often bring them to school to trade with friends or use during their downtime. Since they’re inexpensive, they’ve become an easy impulse buy whenever someone spots a new color or style at the store. Some kids have even started “dumpling hunting” (similar to NeeDoh hunting), where they visit different stores looking for rare styles or restocks they don’t have already.

Tweens and teens especially love dumpling squishy toys because they can feel calming during stressful moments. They give kids something to do with their hands while studying, riding in the car, watching videos, or hanging out after school. Like slime, Pop-Its, and fidget spinners before them, dumpling squishies have become one of those trends that completely take over schools.

If your house is anything like mine, there’s a good chance you already find squishies in the most random places. You’ve also probably heard many trading stories or experiences of others trying to buy them from their friends.

Are Dumpling Squishy Toys the Same as Mochi Squishies?

Dumpling toys are a type of mochi squishy, which is the term used for soft, stretchy, sensory toys made from a squishy gel-like material. Dumpling squishies are dumpling-shaped versions that became trendy on social media.

“Mochi squishies” is used interchangeably, so many people specify “dumplings” or “dumpling squishies” instead of the broader category.

Are Dumpling Squishy Toys Safe for Kids?

Dumpling squishy toys are generally considered safe when used as intended, but younger children should still be supervised. Like many soft sensory toys, dumpling squishies can eventually split, leak, or collect dirt over time. Parents should also be cautious about very cheap knockoff versions with strong chemical smells or sticky residue.

Some schools ban squishy toys during class because they become distracting once kids start trading or showing them off. Some teachers also experienced a student breaking one in class, including one of my son’s middle school teachers.

Where to Buy Dumpling Squishy Toys

Dumpling squishy toys can often be found at stores like Target, Five Below, Claire’s, and Miniso. They’re also available online through Amazon and TikTok Shop, but popular styles sell out quickly after trending videos go viral

My kids and I have had good luck finding them at our local Meijer grocery store early in the morning. A gas station near their school also sells them, but with a heavy price markup.
