Teaching Teens To Drive Responsibly: Experts Talk

Your teenager wakes up one morning and says, “Can you take me to the Department of Motor Vehicles? I want to get my permit.” Excitement? Fear? Panic? A part of you might have been waiting for the day you no longer have to be the chauffeur, but another part of you might be terrified. Do you know how to teach your teen to drive? Watch this 10 minute video for some excellent advice.

Raising A Safe Driver

Excerpt:

Terry Moir: Research shows that teen drivers whose parents are highly involved in the supervised driving process are fifty percent less likely to crash a car. They are seventy one percent less likely to drive intoxicated. These drivers are two times more likely to wear a seatbelt. They are thirty percent less likely to use a cell phone.

My name is Terry Moir, and I am the program director at Channel 3. I am now the mother of two driving teenagers. Before we get started, let me introduce our two panelist tonight. This is in fact Scott Robertson. He is the HR Director and the teen instructor at Drive Team, and I’m happy to tell you that my daughter went through the Solon High School Drivers Ed program, and then I enrolled her in Drive Team, because I really felt she needed the backup. And this is Anne Marie Hayes. Anne Marie is the president of Teens Learn To Drive Foundation, and a board member on the National Organizations for Youth Safety. These two people have so much information to give you tonight.

Safe Teen Driving

Anne Marie Hayes: I want to tell you a little bit about how I got into this, because if anybody had told me five years ago that I would be a driving instructor and talking to parents about safe teen driving, I wouldn’t have believed it. About four years ago, I was having a glass of wine with a friend of mine who’s an actuary. We were talking, and I said to her in the course of the conversation, “You know, so what’s my life expectancy now?” as kind of a joke, and she said, “Well, around ninety-four and ninety-five.”
