What is the highest GPA You Can Get? – How GPA is Calculated

Every student wants to get the best GPA they can get, but the highest GPA possible may vary based on a couple of factors. It is important to note that some school districts measure grades differently than others, so you should reference your school materials for the most accurate information. Additionally, the highest GPA possible varies based on how many advanced classes you take. Many schools use a weighted GPA where taking honors, AP, or IB classes can get you a higher GPA.

In this guide, we go over what the highest GPA you can get is, as well as how to calculate it with advanced AP/IB classes.

What is a GPA and what does it stand for?

A GPA is a number that reflects how well you are doing in your classes. GPA stands for “grade point average” and is calculated by adding up your grades to determine an average. The higher grades you get, the higher grade point average you will have. You can also increase it by taking more rigorous classes.

What is the highest GPA possible?

On a standard scale, the highest GPA possible is a 4.0. On a weighted scale, with AP or IB classes, the highest GPA possible is a 5.0. The AP and IB classes are considered more difficult, so many universities give them a more weight than standard classes.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by taking the average of all of your class grades. Each letter grade corresponds with a number. You add all of those numbers up and divide by the number of classes to calculate your grade point average. The best grade is an A, which corresponds with the number 4 in a standard scale, or a 5 on a weighted scale. Then comes A- (A minus) which corresponds with a 3.7 on the standard scale or a 4.7 on the weighted scale. B+ is a 3.3 on standard or 4.3 on weighted. You can see the full grade and number correspondence in the table below:

Grade Standard GPA Points Weighted GPA Points (AP/IB)
A 4 5
A- 3.7 4.7
B+ 3.3 4.3
B 3 4
B- 2.7 3.7
C+ 2.3 3.3
C 2 3
C- 1.7 2.7
D+ 1.3 2.3
D 1 2
F 0 0

Some schools might use slightly different scales, but the table above shows the most commonly used numbers in regards to GPA. Let’s do an example grade point average calculation. Let’s say you’re taking 5 standard classes, and your grades are B+. B+, A, A-, and B. Then we add them up as 3.3+3.3+4+3.7+3=17.3. Now we divide 17.3 by 5 to get 3.46 as your GPA. However, if those first 3 classes are AP classes, then the sum would be 4.3+4.3+5+3.7+3=20.3 and your weighted would be 20.3/5=4.06.

Difference between Standard GPA and Weighted GPA

Standard GPA, also known as unweighted GPA, is measured on a 4.0 scale where every class has a maximum score of 4.0. That means that getting an A in a class results in getting 4 grade points. On the other hand, weighted GPA gives an extra point for taking more challenging courses such as honors, AP, and IB. In a weighted GPA, an A in an AP class is worth 5 grade points. Most students take a mixture of normal and AP courses, so they have a higher weighted GPA.

While many universities will take your weighted GPA, many of them only consider standard GPA and would rather look at your transcript to see the advanced classes.

What GPA do I need to get into college?

Graduating high school with a great grades strengthens your college applications and increases your chances of getting in. However, it is important to note that there is no GPA that will guarantee your admission into a specific school. The best you can do is research what the average grade point average is at a university, and see how your score compares. If your’s is above the average, there is a good chance that you’ll be a strong applicant.

Grade point average is just one part of your college application. You also need strong standardized test scores in the ACT/SAT as well as strong essays and extracurriculars. Taking honors, AP, and IB classes can increase your weighted GPA, thus increasing your chance of getting into college. Additionally, these classes can sometimes count as college credit, allowing you to skip some classes and graduate early!
