Summer Job Search: One Teenager’s Perfect Summer Job

Summer Job Experience: One Teen’s Hard Work Pays Off

I study Computer-Aided Design at the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in Ohio. I have gained knowledge and real-world experience in engineering and architecture, which have made me into a very employable individual. As a high school student at CVCC, I am able to compete for positions that are available to college students and even experienced engineers and architects.

As a high school senior, I began my summer job search back in April. I wanted a job in engineering, since that is my passion. WJE, a company of architects, engineers and materials scientists, offers me a summer internship program that appealed to me.

The online application took me about four hours to finally complete. But I don’t regret the time I spent on it. The care I took on the application (and my résumé) caught their attention. I scored a phone interview, during which I learned that the knowledge and experience I’d gained in my program at CVCC was impressive. Eventually, I beat college and professional applicants in the first round of interviews. After the phone interview, I was invited for a face-to-face interview at the company. The other day, I found out that I got the job. I am now making my way to achieving a feat that other teenagers only dream about. I landed the perfect summer job in a field I plan to go into.

From my summer job search experience, I feel other high school students should know that time plays an important role in a teenager’s summer job search. You must spend time on your résumé because it represents you, and it is important to be patient with others because seeking employment and landing a job does not always happen quickly.
