The Jersey Shore Show And The Impact On Teen Dating

Jersey Shore Take 2

Well I am certainly relieved to hear your opinions on Jersey Shore! Thank goodness it is not a major influence in your lives!

But do you think it influences other teenagers and how they behave? Do you see any changes in your friends who watch it?

I definitely see changes in the way my friends and I will act, but the changes don’t really affect our lives. I mean sometimes we’ll say something they always say on Jersey Shore. Small things, like if the situation presents itself, maybe we’ll say “Busted big time, yeahhhhhhhh!” really fast, which they say on Jersey Shore. This always gets a laugh out of us. So watching Jersey Shore get’s us quoting the characters sometimes, but it hasn’t changed my friends or my life.

Like I said, I rarely ever watch Jersey Shore. I especially do not watch it enough to quote it around other people. I find that lifestyle incredibly distasteful, and I’d much rather be watching better things in the little time when I am not doing schoolwork. My friends are basically the same way. They don’t really spend time watching reality TV shows. When I hear about it in the halls, it’s mostly just someone remarking, “Oh my god! Jersey Shore is on tonight! We’re watching it!”

So if anything, I think it’s a nice tradition that some kids at school have of getting together and laughing at a bunch of reckless adults.

YES!!!! I have seen so many changes with my friends who watch Jersey Shore. I have a group of guy friends that I hang out with at school and literally I have heard them refer to girls as “grenades” and think that it is a friend’s duty to “cover the grenade” while one goes for the hot friend. It’s just disgusting! It makes me REALLY happy that I don’t have to deal with those guys as potential dates and I can just look at their ridiculous antics and just shake my head and roll my eyes.

But something good that I have seen come out of them watching Jersey Shore is that even though they are being completely disrespectful when they are talking about girls behind their backs, the boys are more confident then ever. They truly believe if they put the Jersey Shore moves on these girls they will win out (and sadly sometimes they do). But in their everyday lives I can tell they are more open and willing to converse with girls on campus. So I guess some good has come out of it.

As I said before, I know very little about the show, haven’t watched it, and wouldn’t get the jokes that people make. I am a little worried about what you say, Devan. It’s certainly great that people feel more comfortable interacting with each other. But I think it’s dangerous if young women, like you, can accept being referred to as “grenades,” and put up with some of the disrespect that seems to be going on. I have no problem with having fun, but keep it in perspective. If some guy is not treating you, or your friends, the way he should, you should stay away from him. Have some self-respect. You deserve better!
